During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

A Historic Figure

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
