When Swimmers Escaped Violence, Popular Picture Depicts Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, views the iconic shoreline as her own backyard. On a recent weekend night, she, like many neighbors, heard pops ringing out across the community.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her residence, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw signaled something was wrong.

As she stood on the avenue, conversing with a duo who had rushed up the slope soaked, she heard someone coming up at her rear. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, dashing towards Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was the only one running in the direction that all the others was trying to get away from, and hauling that large equipment and without footwear … He was sprinting at something that surely every instinct would instruct you to go in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just completely maximum effort racing.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery Amidst Chaos

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many moments of valour in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, law enforcement and ambulance crews caring for numerous the injured.
