Three-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic endured a "devastating" injury to his knee when the Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 against the Heat.

The Serbian center injured himself in the latter stages of the opening half following an inadvertent collision with fellow Nugget Spencer Jones.

Jones landed on the foot of Jokic, and he promptly collapsed to the ground holding his leg.

The star, that tops the NBA season in boards and dimes, had a score of 21 points and eight dimes in the contest prior to incurring the problem.

Jokic will undergo an MRI scan on the following day to evaluate the extent of the issue.

"Instantly, he knew something was wrong," said Nuggets coach David Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Whoever who is injured, that's gut-wrenching, most notably a player as important as he is. More information will come on Tuesday."

"The team will adjust as a team. Of course, right now, I'm focused primarily about him personally and the letdown of facing a situation of that nature."
