The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
