The Former French President to Pen Prison Memoir Chronicling His 20 Days Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a book in the coming weeks called Notes from a Cell, chronicling his time spent in custody.

This news emerged shortly following the former president was released as he contests his conviction related to unlawful coordination regarding a scheme to obtain election campaign funds from the government of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Behind bars visibility is limited, with little to occupy time,” he notes in a preview, indicating the book centers around his thoughts from solitary confinement rather than wider commentary regarding the overcrowded and troubled French prison system.

“I forget silence, not present at the prison, where there is endless commotion,” he states. “The racket unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, inner life is strengthened behind bars.”

Court Appearance: Describing the Ordeal

During his plea for freedom, the former leader participated via screen from inside the facility, characterizing his incarceration as draining. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend those working in the jail, showing great humanity, and who have made this nightmare manageable – because it is a nightmare.”

“It never crossed my mind that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, deeply straining. It affects one every inmate because it’s gruelling.”

First of Its Kind

The former president, who led the nation from 2007 to 2012, set a precedent as past president in the European Union and the initial post-WWII figure from France to be incarcerated.

Ahead of his incarceration he declared he would use his time to write a book.

Cell Library

Unconfirmed is did he manage to go through the three books he took into prison: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, in which an innocent man ends up incarcerated then breaks out to take revenge.

Daily Reality

The former leader was placed secluded for his own security in a cell roughly 100 square feet featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison in Paris. Two bodyguards stayed in a neighbouring cell.

It was stated that he had eaten just yogurt while inside due to concerns any food might have been spat on. He had facilities to prepare his own meals but refused this, according to reports. Not known is if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Legal Perspective

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client daily during the incarceration, told the release hearing he would be safer released compared to inside. “He received threats against his life, heard shouts during nighttime and the urgent intervention in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Case Background

He entered custody on 21 October after the judiciary gave him five years in prison on conspiracy charges in connection with efforts to secure political donations for his presidential bid.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial is scheduled for early next year.
