Antony Price, the influential style architect behind some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her American tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry says farewell to a genuine innovator whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
