Teacher Killed and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The armed faction breached the public educational institution for female students in Kebbi State's Maga area at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.
The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their dormitory, according to a statement.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Witnesses reported a considerable contingent of armed individuals, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.
Local residents told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.
In the last several years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for militant organizations, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, leaving families in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they anticipate and pray for their daughters' safe return.
Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has worsened considerably in the past few months, with educational institutions experiencing the greatest impact of the unrest.
