Senegal's Rising Star Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
When I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and natural ability won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival
That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and earning best player.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.
Influences and Playing Style
Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, having been shown red at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
At Monaco, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Right now, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the game.
