Cameron Norrie earned the biggest victory of his professional journey by rebounding from a lost first set to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win marks Norrie's first ever victory over a reigning world No 1.

"Huge. Incredibly significant for me," stated Norrie, who joins as the fifth British man in the record books to defeat a top-ranked player. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualifiers here. I just tried to embrace my game in the closing months of the year. To get a triumph like this, it's the biggest success of my career, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and arguably the most in-form player in the tennis scene right now."

The British player, ranked 31st globally, also halted Alcaraz's supreme sequence of nine finals in a row and 17 consecutive Masters 1000 wins, which marked the finest stretch of results in the Spanish star's young professional path.

Alcaraz looked to be progressing easily to a win at the start as he sailed through the opening set. However, Norrie steadily battled back back into the game by delivering with improved accuracy and pulling the Spaniard into extended, physical rallies. His relentless steadiness and dependability gradually made an impact.

During large parts of the battle, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he found it challenging to get his timing right on his baseline shots. The rising talent looked particularly struggling striking his primary weapon, which has been the most effective stroke in the sport for much of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 errors. On the other side, Norrie offered his opponent so few mistakes, sustaining his steadiness, physicality and penetration the entire contest while delivering effective serves and picking his spots to move forward and strike effectively.
