Arsenal's manager has expressed confidence that his squad can continue to cope with fitness issues after disclosing that attacker Kai Havertz is not ready for a few more weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The German forward has been absent since the summer due to knee surgery. Hoped to return at the start of this month, Arteta explained the player encountered a problem when increasing his rehabilitation and failed to reach “to the next level.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a team that is much more reliable and has greater depth,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This news leaves a selection headache for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between persisting with Mikel Merino, who found the net in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return from a muscle injury as a substitute. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is an option following a lengthy absence.

Defensive Concerns Remain

Additional concerns surround centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Chelsea match. Therefore, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably keep their places in the backline for the league leaders.

The manager is convinced the £250m spend on reinforcements during the summer has left Arsenal in a much stronger position to navigate such absences.

Greater Options Vital for Title Challenge

When asked if increased squad depth was aiding their title quest, the manager agreed. “Absolutely, since the current term has seen more issues in the attacking line, and now what’s happening with the defence,” he added.

“History has shown us that we must deploy players in alternative spots, and they need to be prepared to fulfil different roles if we want to compete at the top. And the case of Mikel Merino.”

Arteta's Support for Suffering Havertz

Speaking about the setback previously mentioned by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered further detail. “His recovery was progressing. He failed to advance to the next level and now the signs are like we have overcome that hurdle.”

The manager conveyed his eagerness to have him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. Truly, it’s a player that, for me, I love so much for his contributions to the team, but his personality, his attitude. I see him suffer while sidelined.”

“His availability record is phenomenal, he's rarely been injured, and I am eagerly awaiting to have him back around the team playing because I think it’s going to be a huge lift.”
