Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures were from was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
