A Number of Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Hits Delta Aircraft Arriving in Sydney
Multiple passengers and crew were hurt following a Delta Airlines flight originating in Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia was hit by significant turbulence on Friday morning.
Delta Flight 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it touched down at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson told. Four flight attendants were injured.
Local paramedics stated they evaluated five patients, and took three of them to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that included spinal discomfort and headaches. The injured were between their 30s up to the 70s.
It is the most recent case of commercial jets encountering atmospheric disturbance, with researchers saying that global warming is a major factor.
The aircraft was carrying nearly 250 travelers and fifteen staff members on the Airbus A350, the representative said, stating that the plane touched down "safely and normally" at Sydney Airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on Friday.
Emergency responders indicated they got a call just only 180 seconds prior to the plane arrived, and ambulances were standing by on the runway.
The reasons turbulence is growing more frequent - and more severe.
During the past year, 25 people sustained injuries when a Delta Airlines flight, flying from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, hit "severe" atmospheric disturbance just 120 minutes into the transoceanic journey, and was forced to make an precautionary landing.
Earlier this year, passengers and crew on a Singapore Airlines jet experienced a terrifying five seconds of severe turbulence. One passenger lost their life and many were hurt, as unbelted passengers were thrown from their seats and were slammed back.
Turbulence is a common occurrence while flying, and while instances of significant turbulence are reportedly becoming more frequent, they are still very rare.
Data suggests that there are an estimated 5,000 incidents of severe-or-greater turbulence each year, out of a sum of in excess of 35 million aircraft departures that are conducted around the world.
